Initiatives

LiveWell Lawrence coalition members are continually involved in initiatives that make it easier for Lawrence and Douglas County residents to eat healthy foods, be physically active and live tobacco free. Here are some current projects:

The Farm Fresh Challenge
During the month of August, Douglas County residents are being asked to join in the
Farm Fresh Challenge to experience local food.
Throughout the month, residents will have
the opportunity to learn more about local foods that are available at area grocery stores
and connect to the farmers who produce these fresh, healthy, delicious foods!
To learn more,
check out the Farm Fresh Challenge website.

Safe Routes

Be Active Safe Routes
Be Active Safe Routes is a local movement to create safe opportunities for
children to bike and walk to and from schools. The goal is to get children moving
again and to reverse the growing rate of childhood obesity.
Visit the Safe Routes website for more information.

Tobacco Prevention
Tobacco use causes nearly 1 out of every 5 deaths in the United States each year. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. and causes more deaths than alcohol use, illegal drug use, firearm incidents, motor vehicle crashes and HIV/AIDS combined. LiveWell Lawrence works closely with the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department and other community partners to prevent death and disease from tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment offers a free online training for health care providers on ways to help their patients quit tobacco. The course follows best practice guidelines for health care providers to help patients quit tobacco and can be used by a wide range of health care providers, including doctors, nurses, front office staff, dentists and dental hygienists.
